Excerpt Discussions: Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder by Nassim Taleb
Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure, risk, and uncertainty. Yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word for the exact opposite of fragile. Let us call it antifragile. Antifragility is beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better.
Over the past several months, I have been listening to and learning from Brian Johnson’s lectures about how to live a more fulfilled and heroic life, one that moves from theory to practice to mastery in the domains of energy, work, and love.
In many of his videos, Brian talks about Nassim Taleb’s book, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, and how systems and individuals benefit from stressors and unexpected events and how they make us stronger.
Fragility refers to systems that break under stress and chaos. Antifragility refers to those that thrive in unpredictable environments by embracing uncertainty
Antifragility is a mindset and a way of being that involves embracing the challenges and difficulties that come our way. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating resilience, adaptability, and a growth mindset in order to become more antifragile.
One of the key components of antifragility is learning to see obstacles and challenges as opportunities for growth and development. Rather than avoiding difficulty or seeking comfort, antifragile individuals lean into discomfort and use it as a catalyst for growth.
Another important aspect of antifragility is the ability to learn from failure and mistakes. Rather than seeing failure as a setback or a sign of weakness, antifragile individuals view it as an opportunity for learning and growth. They are willing to experiment, take risks, and try new things, knowing that failure is a natural and necessary part of the learning process.
We have to embrace uncertainty and cultivate a growth mindset in order to become more antifragile. Rather than seeing change and uncertainty as threats, antifragile individuals see them as opportunities for growth and development. They are open to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives, and are willing to adapt and change in order to thrive in the face of unexpected events.
As physicians, we face obstacles and challenges every day in our medical practices. Patients don’t read the book and each has a unique set of problems. And, compound that with EMRs, insurance, prior authorizations, denials of payments, and other administrative burdens and stressors, the environment is ripe for cultivating an antifragile mindset to overcome these hurdles.
Antifragility emphasizes the importance of embracing these challenges, cultivating resilience, learning from failures, and embracing uncertainty in order to become more adaptable, flexible, and resilient. By developing these qualities and adopting an antifragile mindset, we can not only survive and overcome, but thrive in the face of these challenges and adversity.
When you are fragile, you depend on things following the exact planned course, with as little deviation as possible, for deviations are more harmful than helpful. This is why the fragile needs to be very predictive in its approach, and conversely, predictive systems cause fragility. When you want deviations and you don’t care about the possible dispersion of outcomes that the future can bring, since most will be helpful, you are antifragile.
