Fromang’s 4 Tenets for his Athletes
Articles to Ponder
YouTube Fishing Videos
If you help them to focus on the one thing they can control - their response - the common challenges and setbacks that trip a lot of people up can become more manageable (Brian Cain “Mental Performance Mastery”).
Over the past 4 years, I have been coaching my son’s flag football team during the fall football season. I have coached many of these kids since they were 8 years old and it has been awesome to watch them mature as kids and athletes.
As they turn 12 and enter middle school, I have started to work with them more and more on the mental side of sports. I try to incorporate many mental tactics and strategies into my practices in order to help cope with making mistakes, losing, not performing at their best, as well as, how to handle winning and making great plays.
The mental side of sports is something that children at this age do not get much exposure to because many coaches barely have time to teach them the rules, plays, and nuances of the respective sports that they are coaching.
For the past 3 years, I have been reinforcing three tenets to my kids at every practice and at every game. This year, I incorporated a 4th tenet into the repertoire. Here is my speech to my flag football team at the start of this season.
My 4 Tenets:
Have FUN:
First and foremost. If we aren’t having fun, then what is the point of being out here. Ultimately, we are here because we all love the game of football, and we love playing the sport and being a part of a team. Sure, we want to win, but winning isn’t the goal. Having fun, getting better, learning the game, and learning about hard work is why we are here - Winning is the byproduct of all the other stuff combined. Do I want to win – of course I do. But, I want to make sure that we continue to coach and play with TENET 1 in mind.
Get Knocked Down, Get Back Up:
In life, things just aren’t always going to go your way. I know that many of you are on social media or watch YouTube and all you see everyday are the highlights from someone’s life, game, concert etc. What you never see are the failures and how many times that person had to retake the shot, redo the scene, or how many times they missed the game winning shot, dropped a pass, or struck out. You never see the losses – only the wins. I am here to tell you boys – you won’t always win. And that is OK. You have to make a choice in those moments, give up or get better; stay down, or get back up. Like I have been telling you all for the past 3 years, we will drop passes, we will throw interceptions, we will fumble the ball, and yes, the coaches will make mistakes in their calls. Mis-Takes are part of life – how we respond shows the character of the person. E + R = O Event + Response = Outcome
GIVE 100%:
If you show up to anything in life and only put in half the effort, or less, then you are selling yourself short. Sure, will you get by with 70% in life. Yes, even in medical school, the one who graduates with a 70% is still called doctor. But ask yourself, are you ok with giving less than your best. As coaches, all we are asking is that you give 100% effort, regardless of your ability, while you are out on the field. Yes, you are going to mess up. Yes, you are going to fail or struggle at times. But if you remember RULE 2 – then get back up and continue to give if your best effort.
BELIEVE:
As you all know, I love the series – Ted Lasso. Everyone here knows my shirt “Be A Goldfish” – have a short memory, forget about your Mis-Take – and move on – Get Back Up!! But what struck me in that last show was his #4 - the #4 in his Total Football philosophy (conditioning, versatility, awareness, and _?_) – the one all the players were trying to figure out – Believe. Believe in yourself, your teammates, your coaches – you have to believe. Believe that you can get better, believe that you can do what you set your mind to, believe in the process.
So, these are the 4 tenets that I have been having my players recite back to me each and every practice and game. I am trying to build character and shape their minds so that they can face any challenge or win with poise and thoughtfulness so as to not only become better athletes, but better people.
You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It's a goldfish. It has a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish. (Ted Lasso)

FLIP THE SCRIPT ON BURNOUT
There are a lot of articles being published about physician burnout, moral injury, work-life balance, work engagement, and work-life integration.
The purpose of the Outdoor Rounds Newsletter is to keep that discussion going by focusing on actionable steps that we, as healthcare professionals, can take to maintain a healthy mind, body, and spirit that enables us to show up for our patients, families, and, most importantly, OURSELVES.

Start Your Heroic Journey
I want to share this with you because it is my mission with Outdoor Rounds to encourage each and every one of you to take a time out for yourselves away from medicine and release your worries, relax your minds, and recharge your souls.
Medicine is a grind - listening to people’s problems all day long and dealing with all of the other administrative headaches takes a toll on the entire doctor - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
I wouldn’t share this with you if I didn’t think that Heroic could change your life in the areas of energy, work, and love and give you the ability to flip the script on burnout and enable your to live the heroic lives as doctors that you are meant to live.
I’m committed to living a life filled with meaning and being my best in service to my family, friends, and patients.
If you want to learn more about how to optimize your life in the areas of energy, work, and love and you need a program to guide you on that path, then I highly recommend that you check out what Brian Johnson is building at Heroic.
Think of Heroic as a modern day Plato’s Academy that distills more wisdom in less time focusing on the heroic virtues of courage, wisdom, hope, love, zest etc.
Brian’s lessons and notes are thorough and thought provoking and give you a baseline from which you can build your own daily routines and habits that will help you to optimize your life.
I have been working through the coaching program over the past 5 months, and I can say, hands down, that this is the best program out there if you want to transform your life and the life of those around you.
If you are interested in learning how to create better habits in order to flip the script on burnout and optimize your energy so that you can show up better at work for your patients and at home for your family, then I highly recommend that you check out Heroic.
