Excerpt Discussions: The Way of the Fight by Georges St-Pierre
And then, all of my energy, everything I had inside of me, went toward achieving that goal. I wasn’t making sacrifices anymore, I was making decisions. Train instead of party. Work instead of play. Perfect practice instead of casual repetition.
In his book, Georges St-Pierre (GSP) discusses the steps he took to becoming, pound for pound, one of the greatest mixed martial art fighters of all time. One of those steps that intrigued me the most was that he made DECISIONS and not sacrifices.
Since he was a garbage man, his family and closest friends thought that he was crazy for having a dream and a goal of becoming a MMA fighter, let alone, one the GOATs.
However, he had a goal to become the best MMA fighter in the world. And how did he do that? Well, amongst other things he discusses in his book, one of the cornerstones was that he made - DECISIONS and not sacrifices. What an awesome reframe. What an awesome way to flip the script.
He made the decision to work hard instead of party; he made the decision to get up early and train instead of sleeping in; He made the decision to have perfect practices instead of casual workouts; He made the decision to eat healthy rather than give into unhealthy cravings. He states that he lived life with a purpose and direction.
In medicine, I hear doctors and other healthcare professionals lament about their sacrifices that they had to make to get to where they are today. They had to sacrifice their twenties and early thirties; they had to sacrifice time away from family; they had to sacrifice future savings and earnings, etc. etc. etc…..
The way I see it after reading this book is that we, as a group of healthcare professionals, made the DECISION to have the privilege to take care of, treat, and heal people. We made the DECISION in college to study hard, get great grades, take the MCAT, and matriculate to medical school. We made the DECISION to work hard in medical school to get into a good residency. And, we made the DECISION to become the specialists that we are today.
Yes, did we have to sacrifice some things to get their - Sure. But if we flip the script, to - We made the DECISION to become who we are - the outlook, I feel, is much better.
Why did we make that DECISION - because we all had the DREAM to be the best; the DREAM to become Doctors. He made the DECISION to be dedicated to a goal and he didn’t veer from that path. He was dedicated to his decision.
We are all dedicated to our decision. Many of the turmoils we deal with in medicine try to derail us from our path. But, with the right mindset, we can flip the script and remember that this was our DECISION, our calling, and fulfilling our calling, is the greatest purpose for our lives.
I started living life with purpose and direction. In the words of Buddha, ‘First, intention; then, enlightenment’.
