To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination... It means to know where you’re going so that you have a better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction.
It wasn’t that long ago, when I was a kid, that I would pull out the multi-page volume that was the Rand Mcnally map set from behind my passenger car seat pocket and plan a trip with my family. I remember the days pouring over the maps with a magnifying glass highlighting the routes with my mom and grandfather as we planned family vacations during our school breaks. Flipping back and forth from state to state, writing down each highway and byway, each city, where we wanted to make a pit stop or sleep for the night. Planning detail by detail how we would spend the adventure of getting to our final destination.
With an obvious starting point and a clear destination in mind, we had to create the path which would lead us in the right direction. Sure there would be roadblocks, u-turns, and missed exits, but, the experiences along the way were what made the process fun and exciting.
Stephen Covey’s #2 Habit - “Begin with the end in Mind” outlines how we should think about the future. Do you have a Vision of where you want to be in 1, 3, or 5 years? Have you thought about the destination that you want to arrive and planned your life accordingly? Do you live each day with your end destination in mind making sure that the steps and actions you take today will guide you along the path you have set out for yourself?
Another way to think about and begin with the end in mind is to think about and actually write out your eulogy. In 2021, I had to give 3 eulogies for family members - my father in February 2021 and my grandfather and grandmother in September 2021. I hadn’t delivered a eulogy for a family member since my mother passed away in September 2002. And, It didn’t take long for me to write about the lives of these very important people because they were so intricate in the shaping me into the husband, father, and doctor that I am today.
But as I reflected on their lives, it made my sit down and reevaluate my own life. Was I headed down the path that I envisioned? Was I accomplishing the goals I laid out for myself 10-15 years ago? What were my new goals? What did I want to accomplish in my life that I still had yet to achieve? Was I putting God and my family before my work and finances? Was I living a life that my loved ones would remember as one of love, purpose, and passion?
I have been thinking and journaling about how my own eulogy and about how I would want to be remembered by my family and friends. I have been thinking about my own mortality and with the end in mind, I have been trying to reverse engineer my life to make sure that I am leading a Christ centered and family focused life.
Keeping the end in mind, creating a clear vision of where I want to go, has allowed me to have a different perspective on life - one that isn’t about money, my job, or getting another promotion. For me, its about creating experiences with my family, creating relationships with my wife and kids and God; its about having the energy to show up as my best self for those whom I love.
Stephen Covey speaks some truth - “when you begin with the end in mind, you gain a different perspective.” Give it a try. Challenge yourself to write out your own eulogy. How do you want your life to be remembered? Work backwards from there. Flip the script and rechart your life.
Share your experiences in the comments.
When you begin with the end in mind, you gain a different perspective. One man asked another on the death of a mutual friend, “How much did he leave?” His friend responded, “He left it all.”
