[Blog] Rigging Live Mullet
Adam Fier with a huge jack crevalle during mullet run last year!!!
There are 3 ways I like to Rig Live Mullet:
Tail** - My preferred way of rigging live mullet. Hooked just under the spine - great for soft to no current; bait will stay on top much better and swim away from the boat, down a seawall, or along a shoreline
Mouth - through the upper lip - great for strong currents and trolling. The bait will not drown but doesn’t usually swim away from the boat very well
Tail behind anal fin - great if you want the bait to dive in a slow to no current
As for gear, it is really important to match your rods, reels, hooks, leader, and line with the size of your bait.
Rod - 7-8ft 8-17lb test and larger
Reel - 4000 size or larger
Line - Braid - 30lb and up; if using monofilament - 20lb and up
Fluorocarbon Leader - 40lb and up
Hooks - have to match the size of the bait you are fishing - too big - and the fish will swim unnaturally -
Can be as small as 1-0 and as large as 6-0.
The size I use the most is 3-0 and 4-0 Octopus Live bait hooks
